After graduating from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, to RAAOC, Grant attended the 6 month Corps Regimental Training Course and was then posted as Platoon Commander, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, Puckapunyal.
During April to October 1966, he completed the Ammunition Technical Officers Course. He was then posted to 2nd Central Ammunition Depot (1966).
In January 1969, he was transferred to 3rd Base Ordnance Depot.
In March 1970, Grant took up the position of Ammunition Technical Officer with HQ Aust Force Vietnam (Army Component).
On 9 February 1971, he travelled to Nui Dat in order to inspect a quantity of captured enemy ammunition. At approximately 1400 hours, Capt Ross and his assistant, Warrant Officer Lyon, were killed by explosion of an M26 fragmentation grenade, which they were in the process of defusing.
