Brigadier Ian James Bryant AM (8th January, 1944 – 25th October, 2011)

Brigadier Ian Bryant, born 1944, is a 1964 graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon, and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Armoured Corps. Following service with 1st Armoured Regiment, he saw active service as a Cavalry Troop Leader in South Vietnam in 1966-67 with 1st APC Squadron and A Squadron 3rd Cavalry Regiment and later with the 28th Commonwealth Infantry Brigade in Terendak, Malaysia. Following a series of regimental and staff postings, he commanded the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, following which he was appointed the Chief Instructor (Tactics) at the Land Warfare Centre.
Brigadier Bryant’s senior staff experience included postings as the inaugural Director Joint Operations in the newly formed strategic level Headquarters Australian Defence Force and Director-General Joint Exercise Planning. His senior command experience includes the initial formation and training of Northern Command as the Australian Defence Force’s first standing unified operational command. His extensive exercise planning and Top End experience was utilised to plan and conduct the key major ADF and Combined exercises Kangaroo 95 across the Top End and Tandem Thrust 97 about north-eastern Australia.
Brigadier Bryant is a graduate of the Australian Army Staff College, the Joint Services Staff College and the National Defence College of Pakistan. He holds a Masters Degree in Defence and Strategic Studies. He was awarded the AM in 1996 for his contributions to the defence of northern Australia.
Ian Bryant was married to Helen and has two adult children. Both Ian and Helen retired to Hervey Bay in 1997. He remained very active in local veterans and regional Legacy organisations, restoring and tuning classic MG sport cars and, with Helen, ran them about the country.
He was the Honorary Colonel of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment from 2001 until 2010, stepping down early to assist the formation of the RAAC Corporation.
